Foley Recording – Day 1

We decided to break the Foley up into sections.

For this day we looked at just doing clothing. We felt that going through the entire film doing one set of sounds would be the most efficient way.

During the recording process, we tried a multitude of microphones to see what would give us the best quality recordings. We tried the sound theatre kit, an SM57 and the Rifle Mic. We found the Rifle mic to be the best quality as it was great at picking up very low-level sounds.

This was perfect when it came to recording clothes as we wanted both loud and quiet sounds to be recorded at the same time.

We recorded this section by matching the movements of the characters in the Foley room and recording it.

We were happy with the result of this.

iZotope RX

iZotope RX is an audio repair plugin which I found particularly useful throughout this project.

This tips and tricks section from iZotope was helpful in explaining the plugins which sped up the repairing process.

The plugin features a graphical view of the sound so you can manually select different sections of it. This also allows you to edit different files at once, which was brilliant for sorting large amounts.

I found it excellent for helping with microphone ruffle when tidying up the radio mics.

De-reverb was fantastic at helping give the dialogue that professional finish and sound we were after.

RX also has a feature called ambience match. This is a feature I tried to use, but I never got a product I was happy with. It is supposed to mimic the characteristic and create a continuous version. I found that it sounded too much like static as I believe the rooms we recorded in were too quiet.

RX was exceptionally useful throughout dialogue editing.

Foley Recording – Flashback Dinner Scene

The first clip we were given was a flashback sequence. This scene comprised of two characters chatting around a table.

As this was during the time where syncing the dialogue was proving challenging, we decided to start with Foley.

Due to the simplicity of the scene, we found it easy to create a list of necessary sounds. We did a few passes adding different sounds and layers.

We learned from last years project that it is easier to do an entire film pass of one particular object than doing lots of separate ones at once.

We decided against adding any post production during this recording process as we had not figured out how we would go about this at the time.

Unfortunately for us. This scene was changed in the first cut of the final film.

Media Meetings – March

As this month we were filming, we met with the group to talk about travel arrangments and equipment. They asked for a list of the equipment while shooting.

There was some confusion with equipment as they weren’t too sure what radio microphones were and this caused some issues.

After we had reassured them that they would be the best microphone for the shoot, they relaxed about it.

The rest of this month consisted mainly of the filming process.

Dave Meetings – March

Our first meeting this month was about some issues we were having with the group.

This was due to poor communication from the media team about what was needed from us. As filming for the first scenes in Home nightclub got closer, we found they cut dialogue, and we were no longer needed. This was quite frustrating as we had spent time setting equipment up for the shoot.

Joe and I during this period expressed that the poor communication could lead to further problems and that swapping projects may work out better.

Dave spoke about seeing what the media group were like on set to see if they were easier to work with. We went the Home shoot and recorded a good amount of material to use just in case.

The next few meetings were taken up by filming dates.

After filming had been finished, we spoke with Dave about the process and how it had gone from our point of view. Dave advised us on the next steps of the project in regards to editing and looking at getting a picture lock date.

Towards the end of the month, we encountered a lot of issues with syncing dialogue. This was due to us not knowing who was in charge of this aspect. We met with Phil Stevens the media groups tutor to go over the issue together.

This was quickly resolved.
